Assorted things

A karate instructor I met talked me into taking classes, saying that it was a lot more fun--and more effective in his opinion--than going to the gym (mind you, most things are more fun). I went to my first class last night, and he was right: it was fun. He said I was "awesome" for my first time, but maybe he says that to all the beginners. :-P He warned me I might be sore today, but I haven't even had a twinge. I must be fitter than I thought, but I am a lot more active than I was a year ago when I worked in an office.

There's a new trailer for the Holmes and Watson film which I think fans will enjoy. :-)

And here are some photos that were languishing on my camera.

I saw Vic by the looking cat, again on a wet day, and went out to get a better picture of him.

Vic by the looking cat.

A close-up that shows that it really is blue-green. You can see it's quite rough-hewn; perfect for outside.

A cherimoya AKA custard-apple we found green at one of the local gourmet supermarkets. The guy at the Mexican Cafe told us about these, and said we'd know it was ripe when it went brown and gave slightly, like an avocado. So here it is, about to be eaten a week later.

And here it is cut in half. It did taste rather like custard and apple. It was quite filling, and apparently it's a complete balanced meal.

Congrats on the karate. :-) And your cat is a handsome looking fellow.

Ooooh... *noms* and aww, Vic can so out-pose that cat any day:).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
Vic always looks good. He's a photogenic little bastard. I say bastard because it takes two of us to get some antibiotic down him and it's not easy.

[identity profile] jthijsen.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I live alone and most of my cats would be difficult with pills (understatement!!!) even if I had help getting a pill down their throats. So I thank all the little gods and goblins of medical research which inspired researchers to come up with convenia, which is a complete course of antibiotics in one single shot. It's expensive, but to me it's worth every single cent. Unfortunately it doesn't work for all bacteria.

Vic is indeed a very handsome boy and I think he knows it.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
If you are on your own the only real way is to mummify the the fuzzy suckers in a towel if you haven't as mastered the art of sneaking up on them while they sleep and pop the pill in while they are still going "whu, whaa" after being woken.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think we have that option here, but because we can't get a worming pill down Vic (at least the antibiotic is liquid) we've bought a worming treatment that goes on his skin, like the flea one. He doesn't mind that at all.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Good for you for taking karate. Martial arts can be great fun and a good all-round exercise.

Aw Vic is cute next to the cat.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
That's what he said! :-)

Vic seems to like sitting there.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh that cherimoya looks awesome. I'm always eager to try to eat things like that. Never heard of it before.

Karate sounds like a lot of fun. I mean, definitely more fun than running on a tredmil or something.

I really love that looking cat. :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
I had heard of custard apples, but I had no idea what they looked like till the Mexican guy showed us one. I'll buy another one if I see it.

I'll have to take some photos of the indoor looking cats. I have two identical Thai ones, one bought by me up north, and the other a gift from friends in Wellington--strange coincidence--and some black cats whose paws and tails dangle over the shelf edge. :-) One really reminds me of Tessa.

[identity profile] ultrapsychobrat.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Darling Vic. :)
Interesting fruit--the one time I had one, I don't think it was completely ripe.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
He was cute; when I went out to take a photo of him right beside the cat, he came towards me to see what I was doing, then sat down and I got this one. I got several of him but didn't want to spam.

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
awww he makes a better looking cat than the actual looking cat. sooo cute.

wow. never heard of apple custards. will have to keep a look out for them

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Have an icon of him sitting on Greg's keyboard and making his PC beep. :-)

They're custard apples, but I think cherimoya is more accepted now. They're cute, all scaly like dragon hearts, :-)

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
custard apples *is not properly woken up yet*

scaly dragon hearts is an apt description

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
We all keep telling you that you're awesome. Perhaps now that it's been confirmed by a third party you'll believe us. :)

Unfortunately I think that the trailer site must have been overloaded when I tried it just now. The clip kept on slowing and stopping, to the point that it was unwatchable. But I saw the previous trailer at the cinema a few months ago, and the film looked as though it should be a lot of fun.

Great photographs, as usual.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Only awesome at some things. Not getting a job, sadly. :-P

That's a pity. It played fine for me when I watched it. Some's the same as the first trailer, but there's new stuff, some of it spectacular, and some just plain funny. :-)

Thanks!

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody can be awesome at everything, and most people aren't awesome at anything.

Good luck with the job hunt.

I may try the trailer again later.

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Nobody can be awesome at everything, and most people aren't awesome at anything."

Well said! *joins the thinks-[livejournal.com profile] vilakins-is-awesome club*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwww, thanks, both of you. :-D

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I will reply to your email soon. I got buried by uni-work and have hardly been online at all this week. :-) And I need to think of Vila-themed things to squee about :P

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I need some Vila-squee since Kalinda's putting the boot in again in defence of the perfect hero Avon. Sorry, ignore that. I'm off to my contract and some lunch.

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
Me too! I am going shopping with a friend tomorrow and I'm going to search for Vila stuff. Everyone has their unconditional-character-love-moments. *makes Vila cheesy toast and pats him on the head*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
I admit there are times I could whack Vila or shake him (mainly written by Boucher) but I love him anyway.

Good luck buying Vila merchandise! I want to see photos. :-D

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes. He can be exasperating. Yet I feel you can only have the right to want to whack or shake Vila if you do love him anyway. *tries to explain* It's like when someone else makes fun of your younger sibling. You're allowed to do it but they're not :-)

*glomps Vila*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Excellent point! It's funny; when I saw B7 as a kid, Vila was sort of a favourite and funny uncle, and now I want to protect him.

Vila is extremely glompable.

BTW I found my Vila catalogue. Some of model Lucy Liu's comments with mine in brackets:
  • The Vila hot pants are so cute [of course they are!] I would wear them with a pair of stilettos or boots. [Or both in the case of Avon.]
  • Vila is accessible. [Hey, he's just naturally affectionate.]
  • When modelling for Vila, I really want to show I feel well and relaxed in the clothes. [I'm sure he appreciates it and would like to know how you feel out of them.]
  • I am happy to work with Vila. [I know the feeling, Lucy. I am too.]
Ahem.

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was trying to put my finger on it when I was discussing this with Z. She was talking about the fictional characters she fancied - "who is that Vila thief dude you always mention?" and I said "But that's Vila. He's sort of a pet little brother. He brings out my protective kind caring side which is a nice change since I am not usually like that AT ALL." Pet little brother isn't quite right though - funny uncle is a better term.

I love glomping people. When I met up someone from my f-list for the first time in real life, I glomped her as soon as I saw her. 5 minutes later she looked at me properly and said "You're actually pretty short but I didn't notice before." YAY CONCENTRATED ENERGY! Forward momentum!

Ah, Lucy, I never knew you had such good taste.

OKAY, I just almost choked on the chocolate I was eating because I was laughing so much. Avon. In hotpants. Designed by Vila. With the hooker boots. ROFL. *scrubs brain with acid*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Vila really brings out the maternal instinct I didn't even know I had! I don't rush to his defence, guns blazing, any more, but I did when I was a new fan. I don't see him as the funny uncle any more--he seemed awfully old then--but pet little brother does describe it well. :-)

Have you seen Farscape? Chiana (my icon) does this flying glomp to Crichton, and one of my friends has an animated icon of her doing it. Oh yeah, this one:
Image
Not that easy to see, but it was spectacular, from the exit of a spaceship.

Avon already has the thigh-high hooker boots!

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-10-24 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
I have not seen Farscape but I looked up what it was about because I kept hearing about it from other B7 fans. whoa. that is one awesome glomp. And also because I read a crossover somewhere with Chiana and Vila in it ages ago. Did you write that? I can't remember.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-24 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
:-D I wrote one called Grey (http://vilakins.livejournal.com/136261.html), Chiana being a grey girl. :-)

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-10-25 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh she sounds fun. A little crazy, but entertaining.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-25 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
She is: She's a thief, a rebel, and a good-time girl. Partnering her and Vila seemed so right. :-D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
None of the stuff I'm good at, including programming in rare and hardly used languages, will get me a job.

I keep looking and applying for jobs that not so many people will have skills for, but no luck yet. I've still got my little contracts which shall not be mentioned because I hate them so, but I'm not looking forward to summer in buildings with no aircon. :-(

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you considered learning a programming language that's in more demand? Maybe Java or something like that? It's the sort of thing that should be feasible to learn in your sopare time.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, but I still couldn't get a job. You have to show you've had experience here. I learned each language on the job when it was introduced there. They rarely hire people to train straight off, unless they're new graduates. They wouldn't look at me.

[identity profile] wolfma.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, Vic!

And I like the looking cat, especially the colors.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
They both look good in the garden. :-)

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
taste of custard and apple? all kinds of good :0)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a pleasant creamy flavour with a hint of feijoa. :-)

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I have had no idea that such fruit exists! Um...apples I love fiercely but custard...ehm...somehow I had more than enough of very sickly custard severl years ago in one English family and since then...well:-)
Looovely cats. Both!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like custard much either--too much at school, with yucky skin on--but the cherimoya tastes pleasant and mild, perhaps like stewed apples with cream? Would you prefer that? :-) Give one a try if you ever see one; I never expected to.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
IF I ever see one, I will definitely try it:-)

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'd heard of custard apples but that is the first time I've seen one, yet to see one in the flesh. I'll have to remember the tip about it being brown.

Hope Vic has recovered now.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think the main thing is that the skin gives slightly, like an avocado.

Vic is feeling much happier and cuddlier the last couple of days; he's even easier to treat. :-) I'd day the pain and temperature have gone as he seems back to normal.

[identity profile] luinielle.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that photo of Vic and your looking cat - which is very beautiful, btw. I love its blue-green color.
I've never heard of a custard-apple - sounds yummy!
Sorry for the late comment - catching up. :o)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-11-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Vic photographs very well. He's not really in focus though because I had to be quick!

I had sort of heard of them, but I didn't realise they were the same as cherimoyas. It was very nice, quite filling.
